There are times when we get feedback which just blows us away, and this is one of those times, some lovely photos and a poem no less!!

Helsbury Park – a piece of Doggie Heaven,

We are used to lovely place as we live on the coast in Devon!

But at Helsbury Park, WOW, what can we say,

It had everything and more for us to do each and every day!

We’d be up bright and early - first ones at the door,

Out through the paddock, eager to explore!

Running through the meadow, roaming the woods, splashing in the river,

Mum taking lots of photos, something about a ‘competition winner’?

Back to the cottage for a drink and some cookie treats – a gift from Leza and Dave,

We both agreed that they were yummy and now our definite fave!

Off out to the beaches to frolic in the sand and sea,

Daymer Bay and Rock were amazing and Padstow had plenty to do and see!

Sleepy and content by the fire while the girls went to the pool for a swim,

Either Mum preparing dinner or we all dined out at the local Inn!

Every day an adventure, even better than the one before,

We loved every minute and wanted to stay for more!

Then sadly, we watched Mum pack our things away,

Our holiday had come to an end, a very very sad day!

But now we are happy and full of celebrations,

We’re coming back next year – hurray – love Esmee & Lyra the Dalmatians!!

The humans loved it too and walked around Helsbury with smiles on their faces,

For doggies and their owners it really is the very best of places!

"As we approached our cottage at Helsbury Park on a gloriously sunny afternoon, the view was breathtaking. My children squealed with delight as they spotted the ponies in front of the lake. My dogs howled in anticipation as they spotted the miles of open fields to roam and woodland to explore. On entering our cottage we were immediately at ease with the pristine cleanliness and the quality of comfort. My girls quickly rushed to put on their swimming costumes, eager to display their new found talents in underwater swimming, while I took my dogs for a ramble in the woodland.

After a long and tiring day we all transferred into our pyjamas, stoked up the fire and settled on the deliciously comfortable sofas to watch a film with the smell of a pot of chilli simmering in the kitchen. The following day we awoke to dense fog, turning into drizzle, hiding the beautiful view we had only just become accustomed to.We were disappointed and our plans for a busy day on the beach rapidly disappeared. After a stroll with the dogs and a dip in the pool we made our way to Padstow for a mooch in the local shops. Whilst there, we managed to secure a table at The Seafood restaurant which was a delight and it took our minds off the gloomy weather.

Once we had returned to the cottage the temperature had dropped and the rain set in. Again we transferred to our pyjamas and stoked up the fire. Very few holidays do you pray for bad weather but at Helsbury Park the worse the weather got the more relaxing and cosy our cottage became. With a swimming pool to tire the girls and acres of land to tire the dogs, this was one of the most relaxing holidays we have had in a long time!"

Jo Lockett sent us this lovely review: "I just wanted to say what a wonderful time we had in the Farmhouse at the end of August. I booked the holiday as a treat for my 40^th birthday, but the whole family enjoyed a little taste of luxury. The pool was stunning, visited everyday, keeping the kids more than happy and to be honest, we could easily have just stayed put all week, walking in the grounds and taking in the breathtaking views. We were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some deer on a couple of evening strolls and our 1 year old retriever, Tilly, had her first venture into the river and showed us what a good swimmer she is! The attention to detail was amazing and we could have sat relaxing and admiring the views from the breakfast room all day, if only the kids would allow! We would love to return sometime in the not too distant future – just hope I don’t have to wait until I’m 50!"

Sally and Adam Lees came recently and they said: "We had a fantastic time staying in Westhayes for our honeymoon with our son Ethan and our two labradors, Murphy and Molly. Helsbury lived up to all our expectations for the whole family. Ethan at 14 months old loved exploring the beautiful barn and toddling up and down through the downstairs area. The swimming pool complex was so special for us as he learnt to 'jump' off the side and got so excited when he knew we were going swimming every day! Molly and Murphy had the most amazing week because if they weren't running through the park, swimming in the river or walking through the woodland, they were digging holes on the beach and helping Ethan! We can't wait to return."

Celebrate all things fishy on August Bank Holiday Monday in one of Cornwall's most distinctive and original fishing ports. The imposing city of Truro is the venue for Cornwall Food & Drink Festival which draws thousands of visitors to the event which takes place from 23rd to 25th September. The festival is the biggest celebration of Cornish food and drink in the county attracting artisan producers from chocolate to chutney; bakery to butchery; ice cream to clotted cream; or pasties to paella - whatever your fancy, this festival has got it licked, with the finest quality produce from all over Cornwall. Sharon Etzel and her family travelled all the way from Germany to be with us, she sent this lovely review of her holiday:

"We drove practically non-stop for 13 hours from South Germany to get to Helsbury Park for our first visit. We arrived, unpacked the car and went out for a dog-walk down the valley. Literally within minutes of arrival, after a pretty exhausting journey, we were agreeing that it was worth every mile and that we would definitely be coming back in the future!

We had a fantastic fortnight at Helsbury Park. Over the years, we have stayed many times all over Cornwall, but in terms of accommodation and location, we have never had it so good.

Thank you so much for providing such a wonderful place to stay. As I wrote in our feedback form: We loved it, our teenage boys loved it (and that's an achievement in itself!) and of course, our bearded collie Talisker loved it.

OK, the weather wasn't wonderful, but that certainly didn't stop us having a fantastic time, because Marhayes was so comfortable, the grounds so lovely to walk in - and the weather often improved as we drove the short distance to the north coast.

We had a magical experience one morning at Helsbury down towards the river: we were stopped in our tracks by the sight of a fox close by, ears pricked, intently watching some small animal in the grass, leaping into the air and diving after its breakfast."

Here we go again, as ever we're pleased to announce the beginning of another year of brilliant photos from our guests and their dogs here on holiday at Helsbury Park. The first of the year is from Yvonne Brennan who stayed in Broadview with her dog Pola, she said: "Just a quick thank you for providing such comfortable accommodation for us and Pola. We had an excellent break and found everyone in the area very welcoming to Pola, she was even invited in to Art Galleries and Potteries on our trips to Padstow and Port Isaac. Looking over the wall was her favourite occupation when not out and about. The paddock was a great boon for a very athletic dog, who gets withdrawal symptoms if she doesn’t get her morning marathon run. The pool facility is fantastic , I could go on and on but what I am really saying is you truly deserve your 5* award. Thank you again."

The Winner of the 2011 Dog Photo Competition....

We've had over 1200 votes in our competition which is the highest ever, thank you very much. All the photos received votes, two or three stood out from the crowd but there was one clear winner and it was HP004, sent in by Nichola Hockey, of Rio the Retriever smiling broadly on the beach during his holiday here at Helsbury.

Jason & Nichola sent this message after hearing that they'd won: “Wow! Before arriving we had high expectations of Helsbury and were certainly not disappointed. We were overwhelmed by the attention to detail in the cottages, the view and the new pool complex is stunning. Helsbury Park is by far the best dog friendly holiday accommodation we have stayed in, it is like having a holiday at home, all the comforts of your own home and the beautiful countryside right on your doorstep. We think Helsbury Park is a very special place which feels like home as soon as we have unpacked! A superb holiday for all of us. www.ilovecornwall.com is the creation of VisitCornwall, and has been designed to be an official online space and community which will be driven by the passion felt for the county with user generated content, polls, competitions and incentives. Uniquely, it promises to skip the hard sell typical of tourist websites, which is guaranteed to turn off the majority of social media users, relying instead on increasing awareness of Cornwall through credible word-of-mouth recommendations.

The micro-site offers a base for VisitCornwall's social media campaigns that is separate from, and with a different offer to, the main tourist board website, www.visitcornwall.com. It forms part of VisitCornwall's social media strategy for 2011 which has already seen the successful launch of the 'I love Cornwall' Facebook page and Twitter account.

The Farmhouse Garden...

Just wanted to explain how the garden works at the Farmhouse if you're not familiar. There are in effect three gardens, there's the space to the front which is open and provides access to the pool and land. There's a secure dog garden which is gravel underfoot and has a kennel and dog fencing to make sure your dog is enclosed, great for a midnight wee!

There's a garden focused on the humans in the party which has an eating and relaxing area, you're more than welcome to have your dog in with you but you do have a choice.

And the back of the garden which we've fenced off which houses the office, which is now a communal space for people who're looking to use the internet facility and there's also a small children's playground which we're looking to keep a poo free zone for obvious reasons.

Jayne Freer put this article together after a recent visit to Helsbury.

WHEN you think of a dog-friendly holiday you would be forgiven for conjuring up images of run-down, smelly accommodation with strict rules and regulations more suited to a concentration camp. And while you may happen to stumble across holiday retreats which allow ‘one small dog’ or ‘pets by prior arrangement’, the phrases ‘totally dog friendly’ and ‘luxury five star accommodation’ are not often even imagined in the same sentence.

But I’ve discovered an absolute gem nestled virtually on our own doorstep but could be miles from anywhere. Helsbury Park near Camelford in north Cornwall is a dog owner’s dream. We stayed in Marhayes, one of two spacious, converted stone barns. There is also a farmhouse and bungalow to hire on this award-winning complex. The first thing that struck me on arrival was the attention to detail. Our holiday home was kitted out with literally everything we’d need – even stuff we didn’t think we would, such as a dog frizzbie and the parmasan cheese shaver! There’s an abundance of throws for the furniture so you don’t have to worry about your pets leaving their muddy marks.

The interior was spectacular with slate floors - easy for clearing up any little doggy accidents - with underfloor heating. This along with the living room wood burner and plenty of logs and kindling created the perfect cosy atmosphere in which to unwind. And with puzzles, boardgames, books, mini snooker table and table tennis kit provided, you don’t even have to leave if you don’t want to. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, the two main rooms housing four-poster mega-comfy beds and the third with two singles. Each had ensuite shower rooms.

One of Helsbury’s many outstanding features is that it is surrounded by the most spectacular, breath-taking views stretching out to the edge of Bodmin Moor. Set in 100 acres, it comes complete with its own river running through an enchanting woodland and open fields. If you fancy venturing a little further afield the perfect-for-running-walking-cycling Camel Trail is a stone’s throw away, the nearest beach is around five minutes and of course there are the wonders of the moor itself. The trail up, across, around, and down Roughtor and Brown Willy is simply spectacular.

So there’s plenty of choice for ‘walkies’. Oh, and the on-the-ball owners even have a selection of wellies stashed away if you’ve forgotten to bring your own. After a day’s dog walking why not sink into Helsbury’s fantastic new swimming pool, to help ease the aches and strains? The complex is built into the hillside to avoid spoiling the Camel valley view so you can swim to your heart’s content while still soaking in the stunning surrounds. And once you’ve splashed out a few lengths you can relax in the sauna, or shower and dry off and indulge in the massage chair before hitting the small but well-equipped gym.

And as if that wasn’t enough to tempt you, Helsbury Park also boasts a ‘sustainable tourism’ strategy. Visitors are encouraged to recycle their waste in an array of recycling and compost bins, ditch the car and opt for saddle-back or walking, stay local, eat local, buy local, and be as economic with resources as possible. It’s a big part of Helsbury life. The welcome pack is a hefty ring-binder including all the information you need for your stay from suggested walks and the wildlife you may see, dog friendly places to eat, a beach guide and attractions to visit to keep you occupied. The owners actively promote other local business – the divine showering products are from the local St Kitts Herbery - while giving recommendations for the best local meat suppliers and farm shops. My own recommendation would be The Old Inn at St Breward. A roaring log fire, the finest of ales and a warm welcome for both two and four-legged patrons – just how a good pub should be.

Helsbury does have its own ‘doggy code’ to help maintain it’s five star status. But to be honest, any responsible dog owner would have no problem adhering to the few house rules such as picking up poop, covering furniture with blankets and not leaving dogs alone in the cottages to turn the sideboard into sawdust. And to help, the owners have even thought of equipping each cottage with a huge private dog kennel for if you do need to leave your pet behind along with stairgates to help prevent curious canines from vanishing upstairs.

I have to say Helsbury Park is one of the best holiday homes I’ve ever experienced – with or without dog.

Go walkies for Guide Dogs...

Would you like to 'go walkies for Guide Dogs'? Go walkies are a series of nationwide sponsored dog walks with a twist, as it's the dog that is sponsored to take part. You can even get involved if you are not a dog owner by walking in fancy dress or by sponsoring Oatie, a retired guide dog who lost his sight in one eye and is now the official mascot for go walkies.

The event can involve people of all ages, take place anywhere, anytime and cover any distance, and there is no minimum fundraising requirement.

Our Events Team can supply materials to help promote your go walkies event, and publicise it on our Facebook page. Then when you all have a fabulous time, you share their photos and comments with other dog owners and Guide Dog supporters.

Cornwall voted 'most scenic' county in Britain

Cornwall's hospitality was praised as well as its rugged coastline Cornwall has been hailed as the "most scenic county" in Britain. According to a survey, its rugged coastline, sandy beaches and windswept moor lands persuaded 65% of those polled to put it top. The weather and the quality of Cornwall's tourist attractions were also highly rated in the survey carried out by a satellite television channel.

Wildlife Gallery

Just a quick update, we're still keeping our wildlife gallery page up to date, latest spot was a Tufted Duck on the pond, particularly pleasing as we've worked hard to keep the pond clear of weed over the winter so nice to see that the birdlife appreciates it. Other recent highlights include a rather brave fox, a pair of woodcock, massive flocks of Starlings, the stoat (my favourite) and the Heron who seems to be a regular visitor to the pond now. There were lots of deer prints in the snow over Christmas, including quite a few on the deck outside the pool, they must have fancied getting in from the cold!

Jayne Freer and her partner and dog are staying at Helsbury right now, and by the wonders of modern technology they've entered the dog photo competition! This is probably the last entry as we're making a cut for the shortlist over the next day or so. Jayne said: "Having a great time here. The first one is a sepia picture down by the lake with Molly taking a breather after a bit of digging! Note the straw she has stuck to her nose! I've also sent a couple from our hike today on Rough Tor or Brown Willy Tor. Legs are feeling a bit wobbly now as a result!"

Solar Thermal Update

We did a pretty good job of tracking our use of solar thermal water heating last year and the results are in the chart below. Overall we created over 7000 kWh of energy from the sun, all of which was used to heat water in the cottages and in the pool. The best performer was Westhayes with the Farmhouse and the Pool coming out even. Marhayes did pretty well considering the roof is not South facing so all in all a good result.

PV power comes to Helsbury...

With Cornwall being the centre of the "Solar Goldrush" it seems only right that we would be part of it and here we are with our first set of PV panels up and running. They are going on Westhayes, Broadview and on the Stables by the Farmhouse to power the pool. We'll be tracking their output on a weekly basis.

Wow, we're up to 27! Sharon Wigfull sent these superb images of her lovely Setters who were here in November, the weather was lovely and Sharon said: "Just like to say thank you on behalf of our setters for a fantastic holiday. Despite it being November the pictures show what great weather we had. The beaches are fantastic for surfers or dogs what ever time of year. We will certainly be back for our 3rd visit next year!"

Helsbury Dog Walk Map

We've been meaning to do this one for a while, it's a map of the key tracks which you can use for walking your dog here at Helsbury. In truth you can take your dog anywhere on site but these are the areas we tend to maintain as tracks throughout the year. It shows which areas are gated and roughly the best areas to walk. The map represents about 3 miles of tracks which are available here on site, as a guide to get down to river and back would take 20-30 minutes, if you take a full loop of the park then you'd be looking at 45-60 minutes of walking. Or you can do what I do which is to try and go a different way each day, there's at least 6 variants so ideal for a week's stay!

Changes for 2011...

As you will have noticed, we're going to be letting the Farmhouse from March of next year which means we've made some changes to the way Helsbury works for 2011. The key changes are around the pool, once you arrive on site we'll give you a briefing on using the facilities in the pool including the cover, the coin-operated sauna and the new button access system. This means the pool will be available at any time of the day and night, which we hope will please our guests.

The second major change is that we're making our office building available to all guests so they can access the internet to catch up on work or email in peace. Internet access in remote areas like Helsbury is not great but we have a 3mb broadband connection and a wireless hub which should be enough to allow guests to keep up to date.

We've just launched an iphone app to support our communication strategy for Helsbury Park. It's aimed at anyone who's looking to come, is already booked or is here on site. The Helsbury app has a live availability feed as well as overviews of all the cottages and facilities on site. It also has mapping, emergency info and links to our blog, web site and facebook page.

Some interesting developments in the States for dog owners:

California-based Dining with Dogs is a free site that lets dog owners find restaurants in their area that allow dogs in their outdoor seating areas. Currently focusing on New York, Chicago, California, Arizona and Florida, the ad-supported site lets users submit and review restaurants as well as interact with other dog lovers online. Reviews can also be posted directly to Facebook and other popular social networks.
Luxury hotels for dogs aren't a new concept, but we recently came across one in Portland with a twist that we couldn't resist sharing. Not only does the Sniff Dog Hotel offer high-end accommodations, grooming, training and daycare, but it also includes a café where dog-loving humans can hang out and watch their canine companions play for free.
For committed pet owners, the joy of holidays is often diminished by the guilt associated with leaving a faithful friend behind in strangers' hands. Aiming to spare pets and their owners the anguish that can result, SwapaDog is a new network that helps dog owners in the same area connect and exchange pet care when they go out of town.
Prebiotic drinks such as Yakult and Actimel have become highly successful in recent years by combining some fairly sober medical rationale about immune systems with upbeat and positive lifestyle marketing. Inevitably, there's now a Belgian prebotic for pets. Viyo comes in a cat formula and a dog formula, with varieties for different ages. Cornwall Named Top UK Holiday Destination

Cornwall has once again fought off competition from across the country to be crowned ‘Best UK Holiday County or Region’ in the British Travel Awards (on Thursday 4th November) for the second year running. The county attracted the lion’s share of the public vote outshining neighbour, Devon, which along with Cumbria in the Lake District, was announced as a runner-up. This marked an impressive double award win for Cornwall as St Ives was also named ‘Best UK Seaside Town’. On top of this the Eden Project also scooped silver for ‘Best UK Day Out Experience’.

Over 220,000 people voted in this years British Travel Awards which boast over seventy categories and span every type of holiday experience, making them the largest awards programme in the UK. They are widely referred to as the “Oscars” of the travel industry and are the most recognisable and sought-after accolades in the sector.

Malcom Bell, Head of Tourism at VisitCornwall, the Cornwall Development Company tourism service for the county, collected the Awards on behalf of Cornwall and St Ives at the glittering ceremony which was held at Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park, South West London: “I am immensely proud to accept these Awards for Cornwall and St Ives. To win at both county and town level is a huge achievement and the fact that the Awards are based on public opinion make them even more significant.

“This is the third time in five years that Cornwall has come out on top in the British Travel Awards which proves that the county is leading the way and offering the quality holiday experience that visitors demand. The Awards give real creditability to the promotion of Cornwall and St Ives as visitor destinations and there is significant leverage to be enjoyed from the publicity that a national award such as this brings.”

Are we really up to 19 already, well here goes, this entry is from Lisa Castle, she said: "Benson and Oz (Golden Retriever) had a fantastic stay at Helsbury in September for the 7th year! As soon as Benson realised where he was he wanted to go straight down to the fields and river, although he is nearly 12 he was running around the fields and swimming in the river like a young dog, it was really lovely to see. Oz loved exploring for animals in the long grass and hedges at Helsbury. As usual they loved the trips to Daymer Bay and chased the ball in and out of the water for ages, even though tired they just wouldn't stop. At the end of the day they either fell asleep under the dinner table or on the chair and would sleep for hours. They even lay outside the pool while some of us went swimming. Thanks again for yet another fantastic stay at Helsbury. We are really looking forward to being able to stay in the Farmhouse again."

The photo, one of many, was taken when the tide fell at Trebawith Strand, a great place to take the dogs and then you can sit on the cliffs edge and watch the sun go down, superb!"

Keith and Tine Kerley send these great shots of their dogs, Harvey and Branston (Goldies), Dexter (Lab), and Iggle (terrier), and she said: "Had to write a quick note just to say thanks for our fabulous September week in the Westhayes cottage which was so dog-friendly, spacious, comfy, relaxing and luxurious. All four dogs have signed a petition to return ASAP and we will oblige! The daily early morning run in the grounds before breakfast, down through the paddock to the river and woods was a joy. (The canines enjoyed it too!!) Such a perfect location in our favourite county of Cornwall. The four dogs joyfully chasing through the surf on gorgeous wide golden beaches in gloriously sunny weather was everything we had hoped for. Without doubt we’ll be back to enjoy it all over again."

Can dogs be pessimistic? Not when they're at Helsbury Park! Joking aside this is an interesting article about dogs emotions and moods. Dogs are great at appearing to sulk but I can't help thinking it's received behaviour which they know gets a certain reaction or attention - it definitely works on me when Solly does his 'flat dog' routine.

We managed to see different parts of Cornwall and in particular, enjoyed Daymer Bay and The Camel Trail, which is thanks to the website & Dexter’s recommendations! As you can see, the doggies loved the Frisbee and Rufus loved the soft grass outside the cottage. We also wanted to say how wonderful the pool complex is and the massage chair! There are many great experiences to be had at Helsbury not least of which is getting close to nature and the jewel in Helsbury's crown is definitely the family of Buzzards who live on site, they seem to be getting more and more comfortable in their surroundings and even seem to be happy to pose for photos!

Lee Probert and his family stayed with us during one of the best weeks of weather we had all summer, he remarked: "I just wanted to write and say what a fantastic week we had staying at Helsbury Park last week. I was worried it wouldn't live up to the pictures on the website...but it was SO much better! Marhayes was a real 'home from home' for us all week and everything you provided in there was top class. Waking up to that view everyday was simply a joy, although we do admit we were incredibly fortunate with the weather! The dogs had a wonderful time and enjoyed the walk at the bottom of the path by the river. To have that on our doorstep was simply amazing. We're already planning when we can come to stay again because we enjoyed it so much. Thanks again for such a fantastic holiday."

We recently took a trip down to Penzance for a Marine Discovery trip with Duncan and Hannah on their magnificent catamaran, which was a great bonus as their previous trips were on a rib which although exciting would have been a more more intense experience. Sailing on the catamaran was much more enjoyable, being able to move around and relax as we searched for marine wildlife.

The trip took us amongst the granite crags and turquoise waters of West Penwith, the jagged claw of the far south west of England jutting out into the Atlantic. Not only astonishingly beautiful, this area is home to an amazing array of sealife. The overall experience had been very enjoyable but as we headed home it took an amazing turn as we sailed into a huge pod of dolphins who came up to the boat and played with us for around half an hour, a truly exhilarating moment and one which will stick in the memory for some time to come, here's a video we made during the show:

Cornwall Named Most Scenic County

With pretty gardens, magnificent beaches and various historic sites, Cornwall has topped a recent poll to take the title of Britain’s most scenic county. The survey was commissioned by TV Channel Blighty and supported by well known presenter Neil Oliver to launch their Great British Landscape Season.

Participants from across the country were asked to choose their most favoured counties across a number of criteria including natural beauty, weather, tourist attractions and cleanliness. Cornwall was most popular and scored highly across the set of criteria with Devon coming in a close second. Almost three quarters of those polled expressed an interest in visiting Cornwall in the coming year citing it as best for hospitality, scenic views and containing the nicest towns and villages. Neighbouring county Devon was the second favourite in these categories while Cumbria came in third overall while being named best for wildlife but was a less favourable destination due to its unsettled weather. Merseyside and West Midlands were named as counties that suffered from a lack of natural beauty.

When asked how Britain’s natural beauty compared to that of the rest of Europe, 87% of people believed the British landscape was as scenic as or better than the mainland. The main reasons put forward that might put tourists off from visiting the British Isles were weather, high costs of transport and the exchange rate.

Malcolm Bell of VisitCornwall comments: “Our visitors are consistently telling us that it is the quality of Cornwall’s natural environment that attracts them here and it is fantastic that this survey not only backs that up but recognises Cornwall’s beauty as being above and beyond that of any other destination. Any visitor to the county can’t fail to be visually impressed; Cornwall’s unique location is undoubtedly one of our greatest assets and is a invaluable unique selling point.”
